  Digital Architecture Now | 20/11/08

Neil Spiller, a visionary architect, has published the work of ORTLOS among others in his new book "Digital Architecture Now". It is a great honor to be included in this world-wide survey of emerging talent.
Presenting the hottest architectural visionaries from around the world, "Digital Architecture Now" celebrates the conceptual architects who are pushing digital design and software to their limits. In his introduction and concluding essay, Neil Spiller places this contemporary work in the context of recent developments and considers the future direction of digital architecture. The heart of the book features architects' best projects, presented in vivid, colourful and breathtaking detail through texts, plans and renderings that challenge our assumptions about 3-D space and redefine the future of architecture.

ORTLOS at La Biennale di Venezia | 08/10/08

ORTLOS space engineering has been invited to lead a design laboratory at the "small unsuspicious academy of subversion"
in the frame of SENSE OF ARCHITECTURE at the 11th international architecture exhibition La Biennale di Venezia.

"Sensitive Space, 7/24" within "Sense of Architecture" is an experimental lab with a trans-disciplinary team dealing with the relationship between architecture and program.
With the technological progress of 21st century we finally have the option, actual infinitive potentialities, to achieve an "on-demand" behaviour of space within networked augmented reality. All acting areas of "sensitive space", including production, social communication, data flow and soundscape, can be unified into a single continuum. Processing and performance of this "sensitive space" will be presented within a temporary installation, on which the team will work 7 days and nights - 24 hours long (7/24), mapped and navigated by networked sound nodes distributed through several city locations, creating "a geo-tagged cloud" of visual and acoustic information-space.

There will be update daily and more info here.

Club Future Public Discussion | 17/11/07

Club Zukunft (Future) regularly holds a series of events from the Department of Economic and Tourism Development provided for Graz entrepreneurs, experts connected to the university, politicians and the media. The participants discuss current topics and exchange information about developments, trends and visions over the next five to ten years.

ORTLOS architects have been invited to discuss the future of design and common understanding of it based on aesthetical issues.
It is a good chance to introduce new strategies in understandings of design possibilities for the 21st century beyond the aesthetics. Andrea Redi will be also at the round table, with other experts related to this topic. So join in if you are around, or read in german here.

City Upgrade ? the High-spirited Networked City

"If talent magnet developments can get the formula right, they will probably become key to urban competitiveness in the twenty-first century". _William J. Mitchell

A hard fact to start with: Our society is going through a transition that is crazier and riskier than ever. It is partly a result of globalization, partly of the Digital Revolution and the information-based economy it has spawned. By freeing us from physical boundaries and physical assets, it has made us both more flexible and more vulnerable to competitors of all kinds. And: It forces us to radically rethink just how long not only business companies, but well-established institutions and even cities too, can survive and thrive.

In today's fast-moving, transnational reality, which can best be characterized as a turbulent maelstrom of ceaseless innovation and change, i.e. uncertain and volatile, European cities, regardless of their ranking, need to act like businesses, i.e. as competitors struggling to attract talents from all over the world ? the hottest ingredient of economic success in the near future, uncertain and volatile, too.

To succeed in this struggle, new socio-spatial configurations are required ? vibrant agonistic public spheres (Ch. Mouffe) ? in which technology, economic and institutional organizations, social relationships, and spatial structures are very closely intertwined, thus enabling all kinds of possibilities for expanding individual opportunity, transforming the structure of work, and creating the future of Europe on its way from the background-based world to the talent-based and performance-based world of universal urbanism. A necessary prerequisite for this is a new dynamic concept of space that is enhanced by dimensions immateriality and nonlocation (P. Weibel), thus propelling emergence of the new (innovation, change) in an unprecedented way. Keyword: Imagination Economy ? the future of Europe.

And it is this scrutinizing of the empowering potential of such new socio-spatial configurations, enhanced by dimensions immateriality and nonlocation, that is the formidable challenge of the conference City Upgrade ? the High-spirited Networked City, based on the principle of shared research interests. Experts from internationally renowned scientific institutions, research labs and architectural studios will help us get results and, in doing so, come closer in making our vision of Boulevard of Production in Graz 8020 come true.

Focused, well-designed, fast-paced, and free of charge, the conference will also feature a very special guest ? Miss Folly ? performing the introductory story.

  Nick's Cave Trailer finished!!! | 03/10/06

ORTLOS architects work like mad for 6(!!) months to finish the trailer, for the 30 minutes movie we are planning to do. Now the 3:30 min output is here and it looks really cool. Check it out here.

Nick?s Cave is a story about mid-thirties person who decides to withdraw himself to self build virtual cave, an asylum in order to plan his revenge upon his biggest enemy: small city where he grew up and its middle-class people. But even with his 6 virtual clones (each representing one sense) and his wishful digital environment he created, he is still missing something ineffable. Only a keen plan can lead him to the final cognition.

Stay tuned and watch out for the news, when the final movie is finished and it hits all major cinemas :-)

ORTLOS book is out NOW!!! | 22/09/05

After 2 years working together with famous graphic designer David Carson on the ORTLOS book: Architecture of the NetWORKS, it is available now.

The architects of ORTLOS characterize the "end of architecture" in a way that is comparable to American graphic-design legend David Carson's radical description of the "end of the print medium." This unique publication, the result of an unusual creative collaboration between ORTLOS and Carson, presents a dozen projects, dating from 2000 to 2003. Foreword is written by Thom Mayne, Morphosis, the winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize 2005.

The book can be ordered e.g. at Amazon, or directly through the publisher Hatje Cantz.
